Domestic Violence (a.k.a. Intimate Partner Violence – IPV) is a pattern of coercive and assaultive behaviors that adults or adolescents use to control an intimate partner. This pattern is especially pervasive and troubling among young adults and teens:
- Nearly 20.9% of female high school students and 4% of male high school students report being physically or sexually abused by a dating partner.
- Nearly 1.5 million high school students in the United States are physically abused by dating partners every year.
- A recent study of 10th graders found that 35% had been either physically or verbally abused; 31% were perpetrators of physical or verbal
- 10% of teenage students in dating relationships were coerced into sexual intercourse in the previous
- 26% of teens in relationships were victims of cyber-dating Females were twice as likely to be victims as males.
- 57% of teens know someone who has been physically, sexually, or verbally abusive in a dating
- Only 33% of teenage dating abuse victims ever told anyone about it.
This follow-up presentation to last year’s “Intimate Partner Violence: Helping Victims and Families” program is designed to help participants recognize the dynamics of intimate partner violence, particularly among teens, with the goal to enhance victim safety and offender accountability. Specifically, participants will learn how to:
- Identify the dynamics of teen dating violence.
- Identify power and control tactics focused on teens.
- Examine the differences between healthy and unhealthy relationships among teens.
- Examine the key elements of teen equality in relationships.
- Identify ways to handle relationship “red flags” and end a relationship safely.
- Provide support to someone if they realize that they are already in an abusive relationship.
- Learn how to develop and implement a personal safety plan and help someone who may be in crisis.
