What are the NYS school counselor certification requirements? Visit the NYSED website Certification Requirements page.
- Select “Administrative and Pupil Personnel Services” for Area of Interest.
- Select “School Counseling” for Subject Area.
- Select PreK-12 All Grades” for grade level.
- Select “School Counselor” for title.
- Type of certificate will depend upon what level of certification you are interested in learning about.
Which colleges and universities in NYS offer school counseling programs? NYSED has a search feature of registered programs in NYS that prepare school counselors:
- Select “Search for programs leading to Teacher Certification” and then “submit”.
- Select “School Counselor” from the drop down menu of certification titles and then “submit”.
Where can I find school counseling job opportunities in New York State? Many NYS districts utilize the OLAS Online Application System.
Roles and Ratios
Does NYSED mandate school counselors or ratios? NYSED supports the ASCA standard of 100-250 students per school counselor but has not mandated this or any ratio.
What are the student-to-school-counselor ratios in NYS? The most recent data available is from ASCA for 2013-14.
